Commercial Grounds Maintenance Tips: Removing Graffiti

Graffiti is a nuisance for business owners. It is unsightly and gives the impression there is a troublesome element that hangs about in the area.

When The London School of Ecnomics looked into the factors that reduce property prices, Graffiti was top of the list. In some areas of the country Graffiti can be attributed to a 10% reduction in property value.

And it is a nationwide problem, too. Dealing with and removing Graffiti costs the UK about £1billion every year. Much like the cost of removing litter, this cost is often covered with rates and taxes paid by local businesses and the companies that run commercial retail parks or industrial estates.

Types Of Graffiti

There are actually a couple of types of graffiti:

Tagging

This is usually done with a felt marker pen.

Offensive Graffiti

Using paint, this sort of graffiti is designed to offend or insult.

Graffiti Art

There are many graffiti artists that use buildings, trains and such as their canvas. Some appreciate their creativity but some don't.

How To Remove Graffiti

Removing graffiti is not difficult but it is time-consuming. And it often requires equipment and/or chemicals.

Here are some of the ways graffiti can be removed:

  • Cloths with abrasive powder
  • Scourers
  • White spirit
  • Wire brushes
  • Paint remover

But quite often, as soon as the graffiti is removed, the offending 'artists' come back and paint a load more.

A simple way to combat this is by painting over the fresh graffiti. Keeping stores of paint at your premises lets you keep on top of a graffiti problem easily.

There are also anti-graffiti coatings that can be applied to walls and other surfaces that prevent the paints or aerosols from 'sticking' to them.
